Investment casting is an old metal-forming technique. Originally, beeswax was used to make the patterns, but today, we use advanced waxes, refractory materials, and special alloys. This process creates parts with precision, consistency, and strength using various metals like aluminium, bronze, magnesium, cast iron, stainless steel, and tool steel.
The casting process involves creating a ceramic mould, called an investment, through three repeated steps: coating, stuccoing, and hardening. First, the cluster is dipped in a fine refractory material slurry, allowing excess to drain off. Next, it’s covered with coarse ceramic particles by dipping, sprinkling, or applying by hand. Finally, the coating is left to harden. These steps are repeated until the mould reaches a thickness of 5 to 15 mm (0.2 to 0.6 inches).
After the mould dries for 16 to 48 hours, it’s placed upside-down in a furnace or autoclave to melt or vaporize the wax. Using dehumidifiers can speed up the drying time, which is crucial for maintaining productivity.
Controlling moisture is important because materials used in investment casting can absorb moisture, causing defects in the final product. Proper humidity control prevents issues like porcelain mould distortion and hairline cracks. It also helps avoid hydrogen gas formation that can affect the metal’s finish.
